FARMINGDALE, N.Y. —
Frostburg State split a doubleheader with Farmingdale State in baseball action Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats took game one 7-1 but lost the second contest 9-2.
Frostburg State is 5-5 on the season while Farmingdale State is 1-6 after capturing its first win of the season.
Junior Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) scored an unearned run in the top of the first to give visiting Frostburg State an early 1-0 lead. Two innings later, sophomore Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) doubled home classmate Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) to give the Bobcats a 2-0 advantage.
Frostburg State took a 4-0 lead in the sixth with a two-run single by sophomore Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall). Barone and sophomore Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) both scored on the single.
Frostburg State added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning when Peake hit a three-run double that scored Barone, junior Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) and sophomore Jordan Crystal (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (Monmouth)).
Farmingdale got on the board in the bottom of the seventh when Bryan Ciminelli, who had his clubs only two hits, singled home John Anarumo.
Junior Mike Tiller (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) threw 6.0 innings allowing no runs on one hit while striking out three to earn his first win of the season. William Jansen earned the loss lasting just 4.0 innings and allowing two runs.
At the plate, Daddura and Crystal led the team with two hits apiece while Peake paced the squad with three RBIs.
In the night cap, Farmingdale took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first inning on an RBI triple by John Basquez that scored Rich Santoro. The Rams scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings to open a 9-0 lead. The third inning was powered on a three-run triple by Ryan Pembroke and the fourth was led by a Nick Barone homer and an RBI single from Pembroke.
The Bobcats narrowed the gap to 9-2 in the top of the sixth with a RBI triple by Crystal and an RBI ground out by senior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac).
Ram starter Jesse Scott earned the win giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out three. For the Bobcats, freshman Andy Chrobak (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) suffered the loss, pitching just 2.0 innings giving up one run on three hits with one strikeout.
Crystal led Frostburg State with three hits, one run and one RBI.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they take on St. Joseph’s in a doubleheader starting at noon.
