GREENSBURG, Pa. -
The Frostburg State baseball team split with Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg Thursday afternoon.
FSU (15-8, 6-2 AMCC) lost game one, 3-2, but rallied past UPG (5-14, 1-3 AMCC) with a nine-run third inning to take game two, 16-4.
The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when sophomore Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) homered to left field. Pitt-Greensburg answered in the bottom of the inning when Dustin Mills smacked a homerun over the left field fence to tie the game at one apiece.
Sophomore Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) gave FSU a 2-1 lead in the fourth with an RBI ground out that scored classmate Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley). UPG took the lead for good in home half of the inning when a Todd Deloplaine single scored two runs, giving the hosts a 3-2 advantage.
Sophomore starter John Micklus (La Plata, Md./McDonough) took the loss pitching 6.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits while striking out eight.
In game two, 11 different players recorded a hit as FSU pounded out a total of 20 hits in the victory.
Junior Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) hit a three-run homerun in the first inning as Frostburg State took a 3-0 lead. However, Pitt-Greensburg retook the lead scoring four runs in the bottom of the first.
FSU put the game out of reach in the third, scoring nine runs to take a 12-4 advantage. Webb led off the inning with a solo homerun to center field followed by a sophomore Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) two-run single to left. Frostburg State continued to pour it on, as sophomore Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) hit a three-run homer to left field and Holmes hit a two-run double to right center. Junior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) closed out the inning with an RBI single to center.
The visitors used RBIs from Holmes and Mitchell in the fifth and Daddura and freshman Bryan Short (Ashburn, Va./Paul VI) in the sixth to close out the scoring.
Freshman pitcher Freddy Foshay (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) threw 3.0 innings in relief allowing two hits while striking out three to earn his second win of the season.
At the plate, Holmes was 4-for-4 with five RBIs, four runs, a double and a homerun. Daddura was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored while Peake was also 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
FSU returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Penn State Behrend for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
