Baseball Sweeps AMCC Twinbill Against Penn State Altoona
04/03/2002

CUMBERLAND, MD — Frostburg State extended its winning streak to a season-high four games with an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep of Penn State Altoona Wednesday afternoon at Rick Hamilton Field.

The Bobcats rallied for a 3-2 win in game one before claiming a 10-5 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Bobcats scored three times in the fifth and held on for the 3-2 victory.

Penn State Altoona took a 1-0 lead in the third when Tyson Wieand reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Scott Chirdon.

Cougar senior Rusty Schellhase held FSU to just one hit over the first four innings before the Bobcats broke through in the fifth.

Junior Jake Mannon (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) drew a lead-off walk and went to third on a double by junior Tim Wilkins (Baltimore, Md./Mervo). After a strikeout, junior Bobby Farmer (Rockville, Md./Wheaton (Montgomery-Germantown)) laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Mannon and tie the game.

Sophomore Ryan Hamerski (Olney, Md./Sherwood) then reached on an error to score Wilkins with the go-ahead run, and sophomore Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) laced a two-out single to plate sophomore pinch-runner Kevin Romanik (Millville, N.J./Millville) and give FSU a crucial 3-1 lead.

Penn State Altoona (5-17, 0-2 AMCC) pulled to within a run in the top of the sixth on a RBI-single by freshman Matt Steinbugl, and the Cougars had runners on first and second with two outs.

However, Bobcat freshman reliever Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) recorded the final four outs of the game for his third save of the year.

Thomas scattered four hits and allowed one earned run in 5 2/3 innings to improve to 1-1 on the season, while Schellhase suffered the tough loss despite allowing just three hits and one earned run in six innings.

In the nightcap, the Bobcats scored nine runs in the first two innings and cruised to the 10-5 victory.

FSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first as senior Steve Simpson (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest) laced a run-scoring single and Hamerski drilled a RBI-double before coming home on a double steal off a first and third situation.

FSU blew the game open with a six-run second inning to build a 9-0 lead. Simpson hit a two-run single and Mannon added a two-run double to highlight the outburst.

The Cougars plated four runs in the fifth on two hits and two Bobcat errors, and they added another in the sixth on a pinch-hit RBI-triple by sophomore Art Fogelman.

Sanchez capped the scoring with a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Bobcat sophomore Dan Sidorowicz (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out five in five innings to improve to 3-2.

Davis went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, Sanchez was 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI and Simpson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk.

FSU returns to action on Monday when it visits Pitt-Bradford in a critical AMCC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Panthers won last year's league crown by defeating the Bobcats twice in the AMCC Tournament.
