— The Frostburg State baseball team swept a doubleheader against Emory & Henry Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats took game one, 3-1, and won game two, 8-1.
In the first inning of game one, FSU (2-3) took a 1-0 lead when sophomore Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) doubled to center field, scoing sophomore Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls).
The Wasps (2-4) tied the game in the bottom of the first when Josh Stickley doubled home Casey Burcham.
The Bobcats took the lead for good in the fourth as freshman Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) flied out to center field to score senior Justin Wilt (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick). In the bottom of the fourth, Bobcat junior starter Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) struck out two batters to keep the score at 2-1.
Senior Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick) then led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to cushion the Bobcat lead and end the scoring.
Hollister pitched six innings, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out six. Holmes paced the Bobcat offense with two hits and one RBI.
In the second contest, senior starter Dan Lindner (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) struck out 10 while allowing just one run on four hits in a complete-game effort to pick up his first win of the season. He fanned three in both the third and sixth innings and struck out the final two batters of the game.
FSU took a 1-0 lead in the first when sophomore Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) singled, stole second and scored on a double by Peake.
Two innings later, Jones walked and stole second again before coming home on another Peake single.
The Bobcats then used back-to-back homers from Jones and Holmes in the fifth and a solo shot from junior Ryan Stevens (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead.
Emory & Henry scored its only run in the sixth inning on an RBI single.
In the top of the seventh, senior Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T. Woodson) led off with a single and later scored on a single by Stevens. Junior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) grounded out to score Baugher to increase the Bobcat advantage to 7-1. Gitzen closed out the scoring when he crossed the plate on an infield error.
Jones had a spectacular second game with three hits, three runs, three stolen bases, one home run and one RBI.
Frostburg State returns to action March 8 when it visits Johns Hopkins for a single game beginning at 2:30 pm.
