BUFFALO, N.Y. -
Frostburg State swept an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader from host Hilbert by scores of 13-3 and 21-2 Friday afternoon.
The Bobcats improved to 12-8 overall and 5-0 in the AMCC with their sixth straight win and their ninth victory in their last 12 games. The Hawks fell to 0-9 overall and 0-4 in conference action.
In the opener, FSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when sophomore Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) singled and later scored on a throwing error.
Hilbert countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning with help from two Bobcat errors, but FSU moved back in front for good with five runs in the top of the third.
Freshman Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) started the rally with an RBI-single and senior Justin Wilt (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick) hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at three.
Sophomore Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) then blasted a two-run home run before sophomore Arthur Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) added an inside-the-park homer to make it a 6-3 contest.
Barone singled in a run in the fifth to push FSU’s lead to 7-3, and the Bobcats tacked on two more runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to complete the blowout.
Senior Daryl Keys (Salem, N.Y./Salem) picked up the win, allowing two unearned runs and striking out four over the first four innings to improve to 1-3 on the year.
The Bobcat offense exploded again in the nightcap. Sacrifice flies by sophomore Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) and freshman Jose Auila (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) gave FSU a 2-0 advantage in the second, and the Bobcats added three more runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by freshman Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford), a double by senior Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T. Woodson) and a groundout by Holmes.
Peake and Speights laced run-scoring singles in the fourth to make it 7-0 before Hilbert got on the board with an RBI-double by Phil Gonser in the bottom of the frame.
The Bobcats put up seven more runs in the fifth highlighted by two bases-loaded hit-by-pitches, one bases-loaded walk and a two-run single by Williams.
Dallas Reinard smacked a run-scoring double for Hilbert in the fifth to make it 14-2, but Bobcat junior Ryan Stevens (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) countered with a two-run homer in the sixth to push FSU’s advantage to 16-2.
The Bobcats added five more runs in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Senior Brad Cannon (Federalsburg, Md./Colonel Richardson) earned the win in relief, working two innings and allowing one run while striking out one. He is now 2-2 on the season.
Frostburg State returns to action Tuesday when it host Pitt-Greensburg in another AMCC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
