Baseball Sweeps La Roche in AMCC Opening Doubleheader
03/23/2002

CUMBERLAND, MD — Junior Jake Mannon (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) went 4-for-8 with five RBIs and three runs scored to lead Frostburg State to a sweep of La Roche College, 9-8 and 7-5, in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opening doubleheader for both teams Saturday afternoon at Rick Hamilton Field.

In game one, FSU rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the narrow victory.

Senior Steve Simpson (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest) singled home the winning run with two outs to complete the comeback.

The Bobcats (5-3, 2-0 AMCC) trailed, 8-6, with none on and one out in their final opportunity.

Sophomore Ryan Hamerski (Olney, Md./Sherwood) began the rally with a single, and junior Bobby Farmer (Rockville, Md./Wheaton (Montgomery-Germantown)) reached on an error to give FSU runners at first and second. Junior Pat Fortunato (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport (Monroe CC)) then walked to load the bases, and junior Dave Sanchez (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) pulled the Bobcats even with a two-run double to left.

La Roche (1-10, 0-2) intentionally walked junior Mark Teson (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) to load the bases again, and Fortunato was tagged out at home on an attempted suicide squeeze. Simpson then gave FSU the win with a shot to right center field.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first inning thanks to three hits and two Redhawk errors. Mannon roped a bases-clearing double to right center and Hamerski followed with an RBI-double before later scoring on a La Roche miscue.

The Redhawks rallied for five runs in the second to move ahead, 6-5, but FSU pulled even in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-single by junior Tim Wilkins (Baltimore, Md./Mervo).

La Roche scored unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take an 8-6 edge, setting the stage for FSU's comeback.

Bobcat freshman Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) pitched 2/3 of an inning to earn the win and even his record at 1-1. Sanchez paced the Bobcats with three hits, two RBIs and a run scored, while Simpson and Hamerski added two hits apiece.

Chris Lloyd took the loss for La Roche after allowing three runs on two hits in one inning of work.

In game two, the Bobcats opened a 7-1 lead after three innings before holding off a late Redhawk charge. FSU jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first as Mannon smacked a two-run double and later scored on an error.

La Roche got on the board with an unearned run in the third, but FSU countered with four unearned runs in the bottom of the frame as the Redhawks committed three errors.

The Redhawks scored three times in the sixth to close to within 7-4 and tacked on another run in the seventh, but Hollister recorded the final two outs for his second save of the year.

Junior Dave Huber (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore (Montgomery-Germantown CC)) picked up his first win as a Bobcat, scattering nine hits and allowing four runs - all unearned - in six innings.

Mannon continued his hot hitting by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. He is hitting .600 so far this season. Sanchez went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Bobcats begin their spring break trip with a doubleheader at Maryville (Tenn.) College on Monday at 1:00 p.m.
