JEFFERSON, OH —
Frostburg State earned the fourth and final berth in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Lake Erie Saturday afternoon at Kidder Field.
The Bobcats (22-16, 6-6 AMCC) claimed the opener 20-4 and then finished the sweep with a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
FSU will face host and top-seed Pitt-Bradford in the opening game of the AMCC Tournament Friday at 9:00 am.
In game one, the Bobcats scored eight runs in the fourth to blow open a 5-4 lead. Senior Kevin Romanik (Millville, N.J./Millville) drilled a three-run triple and junior Scott Feller (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage) added a pinch-hit two-run homer to highlight the outburst.
FSU tacked on four more runs in the fifth on an RBI-single by junior Lance Williams (Fairfax, Va./Woodson) and run-scoring doubles by Romanik, sophomore Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) and senior Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood).
Williams added an RBI-double in the sixth and senior Justin Wilt (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) laced a two-run double in the seventh.
The Bobcats scored a pair of unearned runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead before Lake Erie (4-23, 2-10) pulled even on a two-run home run by Jon Gibson in the second.
FSU opened a 5-2 advantage in the third when Wilt smacked a two-run single and later scored on a wild pitch, but the Storm used an RBI-double and an RBI-groundout in the home half of the inning to close to within 5-4.
Wilt finished 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs, while Romanik was 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs. Senior Ryan Hamerski (Olney, Md./Sherwood) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.
Senior Dan Sidorowicz (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking two over five innings to improve to 2-2 on the year.
Freshman Collin Bednar (Millersville, Md./Glen Burnie) allowed one hit and struck out four in two innings of relief.
In game two, junior Daryl Keys (Salem, N.Y./Salem Central) allowed just two hits and struck out a career-high 11 over six innings and freshman Chris Jones (Towson, Md./Towson) went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run to power the Bobcats to the win.
FSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Mahan was hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch.
In the second, Jones laced an RBI-triple and scored on a double by Mahan, and freshman Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) added a run-scoring single in the third to give the Bobcats a 4-0 lead.
Lake Erie closed to within 4-2 in the fifth on a wild pitch and a groundout, but Jones drilled his first career home run in the sixth to give FSU some breathing room.
Keys retired the first 12 batters — seven by strikeout — before allowing a double and a single to start the fifth.
He struck out the side in both the third and sixth innings and did not walk a batter.
