05/02/2006

BRADFORD, Pa. - For the second consecutive year, the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Baseball Tournament will travel through Frostburg State as it captured the regular-season title with a sweep of Pitt-Bradford Tuesday afternoon.

FSU (23-11, 14-4 AMCC) broke a 4-4 tie with a run in the sixth and two in seventh to take game one, 7-4. In game two, FSU rallied from a 2-0 deficit with three runs in seventh to earn a 3-2 victory over UPB (22-11, 14-4 AMCC).

With the sweep, Frostburg State earns the No. 1 seed and will host the conference tournament May 12-14 while Pitt-Bradford earned the No. 2 seed.

In the opener, the Bobcats grabbed the early 2-0 lead when sophomores Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) and Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) each drove in runs. The Panthers were quick to answer, tying the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first frame.

In the second both teams added a run to keep the game gridlocked at 3-3. Frostburg State grabbed a 4-3 lead in the fourth when a sophomore Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) fielder’s choice scored classmate Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford). UPB tied the game in the home half of the fifth with a sacrifice fly that plated its last run of the contest.

FSU took the lead for good in the sixth when Mitchell doubled home freshman Brian Short (Ashburn, Va./Paul VI). In the seventh, Peake smashed a two-run homerun to give the Bobcats a 7-4 win.

Senior Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) earned his eighth win of the season, pitching 7.0 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits while striking out seven. At the plate, Peake was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBIs, one homerun and a stolen base.

In the second contest, Pitt-Bradford scored a run in the third and fifth innings to hold a 2-0 advantage.

In the top of the seventh, junior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) singled home freshman Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) to cut the Panther lead to 2-1. Junior Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) then singled advancing Gitzen to second base. The next batter, senior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac), doubled home both Jones and Gitzen to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.

In bottom of the seventh, sophomore reliever John Micklus (La Plata, Md./McDonough) used a double play and a strikeout of the last batter to end the game. He earned the victory after throwing 2.2 hitless innings.

Jones led the way going 3-for-4 with one run and two stolen bases while Mahan posted two RBIs and Gitzen knocked in one.

The Bobcats will host the final four teams in the AMCC Tournament starting at 9:00 am on Friday, May 12.
