Baseball Sweeps St. Joseph's
FREDERICK, MD -
Frostburg State used a pair of big innings to pick up a doubleheader sweep of St. Joseph’s, 5-3 and 8-1, Saturday afternoon at McCurdy Field in Frederick.
In the opener, the Bobcats and Golden Eagles battled through four scoreless innings before the visitors broke through with two runs in the fifth off junior reliever Juan Aznar (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty (Frederick CC)).
St. Joseph’s lead was short-lived, however, as Frostburg State countered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to move in front for good.
Junior Jake Mannon (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) drew a bases-loaded walk to plate FSU’s first run, and senior Chris Hammond (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood (Montgomery-Germantown)) pulled the Bobcats even with a sacrifice fly.
Junior Bobby Farmer (Rockville, Md./Wheaton (Montgomery-Germantown)) then walked to load the bases again, and junior pinch-hitter Jason Bramble (Chestertown, Md./Kent County (Chesapeake CC)) was hit by a pitch to score senior Steve Simpson (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest) and give FSU a 3-2 lead.
Sophomore Kevin Romanik (Millville, N.J./Millville) then capped the rally with a two-run single to left center.
St. Joseph’s (1-2) threatened in the top of the seventh, pulling to within 5-3 on a pinch-hit, RBI-single by junior Andrew Pon.
However, Bobcat freshman Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) got pinch-hitter Brian O’Donnell to fly out to center with the bases loaded to end the game.
Aznar picked up the win in relief for FSU, while Hollister recorded his first career save. Michael Luzim took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Bobcat sophomore starter Rob DeSanto (Rockville, Md./Wheaton) was solid in his season debut, allowing just three hits in four innings before giving way to Aznar to begin the fifth.
In the second contest, sophomore Dan Sidorowicz (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary’s Ryken) allowed just two hits and one unearned run while striking out four to earn the complete-game win in contest shortened to 4 1/2 innings due to heavy rain.
The Bobcats fell behind, 1-0, after the top of the first but rebounded with a four-run home half. With one out, sophomore Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Simpson then followed with a double to deep center, and Mannon drove Simpson in with a triple to the left centerfield fence to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. One out later, Farmer singled to score Mannon and later came home on an infield error.
The Bobcats tacked on two more runs with two outs in the second. Simpson walked and Mannon reached on an error, and Hammond drilled a double down the left field line to plate both runners.
FSU completed the scoring in the fourth on RBI-singles from Farmer and sophomore Ryan Hamerski (Olney, Md./Sherwood).
Farmer went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Simpson doubled, walked twice and scored three times.
Frostburg State returns to action on Friday when it takes on Grove City at 9:00 a.m. and Lynchburg at noon. Both games will be played at Lynchburg (Va.) College.
