Baseball Swept in Doubleheader Against St. Joseph's

GREENSBORO, NC — The Frostburg State baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against St. Joseph’s-Long Island Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium. The Bobcats lost game one, 11-9, and lost game two, 10-9.

In the opening game, Frostburg State (5-5) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by sophomore Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls).

In the top of the third, St. Joseph’s tied the ballgame at one when Edis Delgado scored on an error. Frostburg State answered, however, in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by sophomore Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) to take a 2-1 lead.

St. Joseph’s took the lead for good in the fourth inning on back-to-back bases-loaded walks. After a Bobcat pitching change, Jason Rudilosso singled to left scoring two more runs to extend the lead to 5-2. Pat Chilton capped the Golden Eagle rally, with a bases-loaded triple to bring the score to 8-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, senior Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T.Woodson) walked to lead off the inning and later scored on a fielder’s choice. Freshman Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) laced an RBI single ad Jones added an RBI double to close the deficit to 8-5.

The Bobcats added another run in the fifth when sophomore Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) scored from third base on a double steal.

However St. Joseph’s scored three runs in the top of the sixth to push its lead to 11-6.

In the bottom of the inning, Holmes had an RBI single and freshman Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) walked with the bases loaded to bring the Bobcats to with 11-8.

In the seventh, Gitzen lined out to center field scoring freshman Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) to cap the scoring.

Freshman Marcus Nalls (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) took the loss for the Bobcats giving up three runs on two hits in 2/3 innings of relief.

In game two, FSU took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Webb doubled to center scoring Gitzen. St. Joseph’s answered in the top of the second with a Burdi fly out that scored Steve Pileggi.

In the bottom of the inning, Mitchell scored on an error and Jones crossed the plate on a Webb groundout giving FSU the a 3-1 lead.

Over the next three innings, the Golden Eagles scored seven runs to take an 8-3 lead highlighted in the fourth with a Ginter two-run home run.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Justin Wilt (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick) hit a two-run homer scoring freshman Jose Auila (Rockville, Md./Bullis School). Holmes then tripled to right center field and later scored on a Jones single to close the SJC lead to 8-5.

St. Joseph’s added to its lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Pileggi. Ron Reed also scored on an error giving the Golden Eagles a 10-5 advantage.

The Bobcats cut into the deficit in the sixth inning when Wilt doubled to left center scoring Speights and Auila. Later in the inning, Williams drove in Wilt on a sacrifice fly to bring the scoring to a close.

Senior Daryl Keys (Salem, N.Y./Salem) took the loss giving up eights hits and seven runs in three innings of work. Frank D’Aversa picked up the win for the Golden Eagles while Vincent Coppola earned the save.
