Baseball Takes Twinbill From St. Mary's

CUMBERLAND, MD — Sophomore Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood), junior Tim Wilkins (Baltimore, Md./Mervo) and senior Chris Hammond (Brookville, Md./Sherwood (Montgomery-Germantown CC)) combined for 11 hits, 13 runs and 12 RBIs as Frostburg State swept visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland, 10-4 and 15-1, Saturday afternoon at Rick Hamilton Field.

In the opener, Davis sparked the Bobcats to victory by going 3-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs and two walks from the lead-off spot.

FSU (19-13) jumped out a 3-1 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by Hammond, a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ryan Hamerski (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and an RBI-single by senior Steve Simpson (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest).

Wilkins knocked in a run with a single in the second to put FSU ahead, 4-1, and the Bobcats blew the game open with a four-run fourth.

FSU plated two runs on back-to-back triples by junior Bobby Farmer (Rockville, Md./Wheaton (Montgomery-Germantown JC)) and Davis. Hammond then hit a sacrifice fly, and Simpson added an RBI-double to cap the outburst.

Junior Mark Teson (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and Hammond, Simpson and Farmer added two hits and two RBIs each.

Sophomore Mike Thomas (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) allowed three earned runs on eight hits in five innings to improve to 3-2 on the season.

In the nightcap, Hammond went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs, while Wilkins was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and four runs scored.

FSU took a 2-0 lead in the first as Davis scored on an error and Hammond hit a sacrifice fly.

The Bobcats increased their advantage to 5-1 in the third on a two-run double by Hammond and a sacrifice fly by Simpson before adding four more runs in the fourth. Wilkins highlighted the inning with a two-run double and later scored on a wild pitch.

FSU put the game out of reach with a six-run sixth, thanks to three hit batters, two walks, two wild pitches and an error.

Sophomore Dan Sidorowicz (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) went the distance for the Bobcats, allowing just four hits and an earned run while striking out four. He is now 4-2 on the year.

The Bobcats will take on St. Mary's (13-25-1) in another doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon.
