Baseball Takes Two from Mt. Aloysius

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Frostburg State baseball team swept Mt. Aloysius Wednesday afternoon in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action. FSU scored 10 runs in both games while MTA managed just one run in the opener and three runs in the nightcap.

In game one, the Bobcats (12-7, 3-1 AMCC) held the Mounties (5-11, 0-4 AMCC) to just one run on two hits while converting four MTA errors into four runs. FSU scored a pair of runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings and added three runs in the bottom of the sixth, to put the game out of reach.

In the third inning, with the Bobcats ahead 1-0, sophomore Jordan Crystal (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (Monmouth)) smacked a RBI double and later scored on a failed pick-off attempt to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage.

Mt. Aloysius scored a run in the top of the fourth, but FSU sophomore Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) hit a RBI double to right center and later scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 5-1. In the fifth, sophomore Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) homered to left scoring classmate Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) to further push the lead to 7-1.

The Bobcats would close out the game by adding three runs in the sixth. Crystal and sophomore Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) each had a RBI while Speights scored the last run of the game on an error.

Senior Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) earned his league-leading fifth win of the season throwing 5.0 innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out five.

Crystal and Daddura each had two hits while Crystal and Peake led the team with two RBIs apiece.

In game two, FSU put the game out of reach early, scoring five runs in the second inning. Senior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead with a RBI in the first and combined with senior Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson), Crystal and Speights to record RBIs in the second, to extend the lead to 6-0.

Mitchell singled home junior Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) in the third and later scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 8-0. Mt. Aloysius scored their first runs of the game in the top of the fourth, however, Frostburg State answered by scoring a pair in the bottom of the inning to make the score 10-2.

The Mounties ended the scoring with one run in the top of the seventh.

Crystal earned his third win of the season, lasting five innings, giving up four hits while striking out five. At the plate, he was 2-for-3 with two hits and three RBIs.

FSU returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Hilbert for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
