Baseball Takes Two From Penn State Behrend
04/09/2006

ERIE, Pa. - Frostburg State earned two wins in a sweep of Penn State Behrend Sunday afternoon in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference baseball action.

FSU (17-8, 8-2 AMCC) held PSB (11-6, 3-3 AMCC) scoreless in both games as the Bobcats took game one, 4-0, and game two, 3-0.

Senior starter Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./ Thomas Stone) led FSU in the opener as he pitched a complete game allowing just five hits while striking out nine, earning his sixth win of the season.

Neither team could get anything going until Frostburg State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) reached base on an error and later scored when teammate Jordan Crystal (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (Monmouth)) grounded into a double play.

After Hollister struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth, Crystal tripled home senior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) to extend the FSU lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth. FSU threatened in the sixth when sophomore Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) and freshman Bryan Short (Ashburn, Va./Paul VI) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Both advanced on a ground out but were unable to cross the plate as PSB starter Ray Devaul got a strike out and a fly out to end the inning.

In the seventh, the Bobcats put the game away scoring two runs to make it a 4-0 contest. Crystal scored junior Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md.Towson) on an RBI ground out and Mahan scored on a Holmes sacrifice fly.

Mahan was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base while Crystal was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a triple.

In the second game, Crystal earned his fourth win of the season tossing a complete game allowing just two hits while striking out seven. He held the Lions hitless until the sixth and allowed their only other hit in the seventh.

Frostburg State again got on the scoreboard in the third when sophomore Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a Jones RBI single. The Bobcats loaded the bases in the fourth and had two different runners on second in the sixth but were unable to capitalize on either chance.

In the seventh, Mahan scored Jones on an RBI triple and later crossed the plate on a sophomore Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) RBI ground out, as the visitors took a 3-0 lead. Crystal sealed the win in the bottom of the inning with two strikeouts and a fly out.

Jones was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, a stolen base and an RBI while sophomore Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) was 2-for-3.

The Bobcats return to action on Tuesday when they host Washington & Jefferson for a single nine-inning game at 3:30 pm.
