FROSTBURG, Md. -
Junior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford)
was 4-for-6 with six RBIs and freshman Aaron Main (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick)
recorded his ninth win of the season as Frostburg State thumped Medaille, 18-3, in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Baseball Tournament, Friday.
Third seeded FSU (29-13) moves on to face top-seeded La Roche tomorrow morning at 9:00 am. MED (14-21) awaits the loser of the FSU/LAR matchup for a nine-inning contest at noon.
The Bobcats scored in all but two innings, the third and fourth, while posting four in the second and six in the fifth. The Mavericks were limited to just two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Peake started the scoring for Frostburg State when he singled home junior Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) in the top of the first. In the second, junior Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)) doubled home sophomore Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) and senior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) singled home Burke for a 3-0 FSU lead. Peake then tacked on two more runs when he doubled home Speights and Gitzen.
The score would remain the same until the top of the fifth. Clark singled to lead off the inning. After swiping second, he scored on a junior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) double. Burke then doubled home Mitchell and Gitzen doubled home Burke as the Bobcats led 9-0. Peake capped the inning with a three-run homerun, his ninth of the season.
Medaille plated a pair in the bottom of the fifth and each team scored one in the sixth.
Clark and Burke each had an RBI in the seventh and freshman Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) drove home a run in the eight as Frostburg State led 15-3.
The Bobcats capped the win in the ninth with a pair of homeruns. Senior Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) hit a two-run bomb while classmate Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) finished the scoring with a solo shot.
The offensive output was more than enough for Main as he pitched a complete game allowing three runs on 10 hits. He handed out one free pass while striking out seven. Kevin Malucknik took the loss for the Mavs after lasting just 1.2 innings and giving up five runs on eight hits.
