Baseball Wins Home Opener 12-2 to Extend Winning Streak
03/15/2004

FROSTBURG, MD - Frostburg State Baseball defeated Mt. Aloysius College 12-2 in its home opener to extend its winning-streak to four straight. Junior Scott Feller (American Heritage/Boca Raton, Fla.) led the way going 4-5 with two doubles and two RBI.

The Bobcats (10-5) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run homerun to deep left by junior Chris Baugher (Brunswick/Frederick, Md.), his second of the season. Mt. Aloysius (0-8) kept the score close at 3-1, until FSU exploded for four in the sixth and four more in the eighth.

In the sixth, sophomore Kyle Mahan (Potomac/Woodbridge, Va.) hit a two-run double down the right field line. And later Feller drove in two with a single to rightfield. In the eighth, the Bobcats scored four runs on two hits as the Mounties had two costly errors with two out.

On the mound senior Kevin Franc (Leonardtown/Mechanicsville, Md.), who got his first start in almost two seasons, went four and two-thirds innings before giving a run on two doubles in the fifth. He carried a no-hitter for 13 at-bats until the lead off hitter in the fifth bounced a ground ball over the third base bag for a double.

Following Franc was sophomores Jonathan Philipp (Chesapeake/Pasadena, Md.) and Mike Tiller (Potomac/Dumfries, Va.), junior Brad Cannon (Colonel Richardson/Federalsburg, Md.), and sophomore Jimmy Hardy (Middletown/Myersville, Md.).

Philipp replaced Franc going one and one-third scoreless innings striking out two. Tiller then pitched a scoreless seventh inning striking out one. Brad Cannon pitched the eighth allowing only one hit and striking out one. Jimmy Hardy closed out the game in the ninth giving up a run on two hits.

The Bobcats will now travel to Tampa, Florida for their Spring Break trip as they will face some of the top Division III programs in the nation including: Allegheny (Pa.), Southern Maine, Millikin and North Central. The first game against Allegheny will be on Saturday, March 20th.
