Basketball Teams to Host Penn State Behrend in Key AMCC Match Ups
02/06/2004

FROSTBURG, MD — Both the Frostburg State men's and women's basketball teams will host Penn State Behrend in key Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference games Saturday at Bobcat Arena.

The women's game will tip-off at 2 with the men's game to follow at 4.

In women's action, Frostburg State (13-7, 4-3 AMCC) can inch closer to the top of the AMCC with a victory over Penn State Behrend (15-5, 7-1), while the Lions need a win to keep pace with front-runner Pitt-Greensburg (17-3, 7-1).

UPG and PSB are tied for first place, but UPG holds the tie-breaker by virtue of a 72-71 win January 28.

FSU downed Villa Julie 60-44 Wednesday night for its second straight win. Junior Tracey Little posted her team-high 11th double-double of the season with 18 points and 16 rebounds to help the Bobcats improve to 17-0 all-time against the Mustangs.

Freshman Tracie George added 14 points and six boards as FSU won despite committing 24 turnovers and shooting 30.6 percent (22-of-72).

Little is ranked 17th in the country in scoring (19.5) and 19th in rebounding (11.3) and is the lone player in the AMCC averaging a double-double.

George (15.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg) and sophomore Kelly True (10.0 ppg, 9.5 rpg) give the Bobcats additional fire power.

The Lions opened the year with a 2-2 mark but have ripped off 13 wins in their last 15 outings. PSB’s two losses were to regional power Montclair State (61-47) and league rival Pitt-Greensburg (72-71). UPG nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to snatch the thrilling win.

Freshman Tenesha Aden leads the Lions in both scoring (12.5) and rebounding (6.2), followed by freshman Brittany Mays (11.1, 5.6).

PSB is ranked 28th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 52.8 points per game.

On the men's side, Frostburg State (11-9, 4-3 AMCC) takes on a streaking Penn State Behrend (18-1, 8-0 AMCC) squad that has won 11 in a row and owns a No. 22 national ranking in the latest D3hoops.com poll.

The Bobcats can solidify their hold on second place in the AMCC standings with a win, while the Lions can clinch the regular-season conference crown and the right to host the AMCC semifinals and finals.

Frostburg State defeated Grove City 75-70 Wednesday night for its fifth win in six games. The Bobcats overcame a 13-point deficit early in the second half and took the lead for good in the closing minute.

Sophomore Dan Ryley scored a game-high 20 points, pulled down seven rebounds and blocked three shots, while sophomore Steve Coursey had a career-high 17 points. Senior Myro Small scored 11 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:06 left.

Small leads the Bobcats in scoring (13.9 ppg) and ranks second in rebounding (5.3 rpg). Grabill is first in both assists (3.8) and free throw shooting (90.3/19th in the nation), second in scoring (12.3) and third in rebounding (4.5).

Ryley tops FSU in rebounding (5.5) and sits third in scoring (9.9). He is averaging 16.5 points and 8.3 rebounds in his last eight games.

Senior James Curren leads the Lions in both scoring (17.6) and rebounding (8.0), while senior Casey Ponsoll (10.8) and junior Jared Clough (10.0) are also scoring in double figures.

Penn State Behrend, whose lone loss of the year was a 57-53 setback to Skidmore December 29, has been among the nation’s top defensive squads all season and entered the week ranked second in the country (51.5 points per game).
