Westminster, Md. ...
Frostburg State ran into a pair of stellar hurlers and dropped its season-ending doubleheader at Western Maryland, 1-0 and 11-1, Wednesday afternoon in Westminster.
The Bobcats, who had their season-high five-game winning streak snappped, ended the year with a 14-17 overall record, while Western Maryland improved to 27-4.
In the opening game, the Green Terror scored the lone run in the second inning on back-to-back doubles by Courtney Wunderlich and Katie Swierkos. The run ended Bobcat freshman Mandy Kessinger's streak of 40 innings without allowing an earned run.
Western Maryland freshman Samantha Abrams made the run stand up, holding Frostburg State to two hits while striking out nine. Bobcat senior Shannon Rexrode doubled with two outs in the first and freshman Stephanie Zych singled with two outs in the third for FSU's only hits.
Kessinger was nearly as sharp as her counterpart, scattering five hits and striking out two in six innings. She stranded six Green Terror runners in the first four innings and held the hosts hitless over the last three frames.
In the nightcap, Western Maryland scored seven times in the first inning and cruised to the 11-1 win. FSU scored its lone run in the fourth, as Zych and junior Katie Harrington hit back-to-back singles to start the inning and Rexrode drew a walk to load the bases.
Senior Amber Waltz then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Zych.
The Green Terror added another run in the third on an RBI-single and scored three more times in the fourth on a pair of FSU throwing errors.
Western Maryland freshman Kim Camponelli allowed just two hits and struck out three, while Bobcat senior Renee Knotts (6-7) allowed 11 runs on 11 hits with a pair of strikeouts.
