Bobcats Falter in Ninth, Fall to St. Mary's, 9-8
St. Mary's City, Md. ...
Josh Hrebiniak scored from second base on an errant pickoff attempt as St. Mary's rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth to edge Frostburg State, 9-8, Sunday afternoon.
Frostburg State (24-14) took an 8-4 lead into the final frame, but the Hawks chipped away with an RBI-triple and a run-scoring single.
After Hrebeniak singled to load the bases, Kurt Bradshaw laced a two-run single to right to tie the game. Bobcat freshman Dan Sidorowicz (1-4) then tried to pick Hrebeniak off second but threw the ball into centerfield.
St. Mary's (19-15) moved out to a 3-0 lead after the third inning against FSU freshman starter Rob DeSanto, but the rookie right-hander settled down and gave up just two hits in his final four innings of work.
The Bobcats scored three runs in the fourth inning to tie the game and took a 4-3 lead with a run in the sixth.
Frostburg State then scored twice in both the seventh and eighth innings to build a seemingly comfortable 8-3 advantage.
Freshman Scott Feller was 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead the Frostburg State offense, while junior Tim Wilkins went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.
St. Mary's freshman Kenny Williams picked up the win in relief of starter Dave Falcone, who allowed seven runs but struck out 10 Bobcats in seven innings.
Frostburg State returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Division II Indiana (Pa.) for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
