Bobcats Tie for Third at AMCC Championships

Altoona, Pa. ... The Frostburg State women's tennis team wrapped up its season by finishing tied for third out of five teams at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships held Saturday at Penn State Altoona.

Penn State Behrend captured its third straight conference title with 18 points, while Penn State Altoona was second with 12 points. The Bobcats and Pitt-Greensburg each scored five points, and La Roche finished fifth with two points.

At the No. 2 singles flight, junior Becky Allnutt (Frederick, Md./Catoctin) defeated Kristen Rosswog of La Roche, 6-1, 6-0, in a play-in match before falling to top seed and eventual champion Jamie Brubaker of Penn State Behrend, 6-0, 6-3, in the semifinals.

Sophomore Dana Braskey (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) also won her play-in match at the No. 5 flight, easily defeating Pam Czernewski of La Roche, 6-0, 6-2, but was ousted in the semifinals in a tough 2-6, 6-2, 4-6 loss to Penn State Behrend's Jen Morton.

Allnutt and junior Christina Miserandino (Westminster, Md./Westminster), seeded second at the No. 1 doubles flight, defeated third seed Kristen Schotting and Jacque Billheimer of Pittsburgh-Greensburg, 8-5, to advance to the finals, where they were blanked 8-0 by Penn State Behrend's Julie Leininger and Jamie Brubaker. Allnutt and Miserandino earned second-team All-AMCC honors for finishing as the runners-up.

Junior Kathy Arnold (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) and freshman Lisa Killen (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) were 8-0 winners over La Roche's Jennifer Jasenak and Rosswog in the play-in match at No. 2 doubles, but the pair fell 8-4 to flight champion Angela Albertson and Christine Chan of Penn State Behrend in the semifinals.

Killen was voted the league's Co-Newcomer of the Year along with Valerie Wasick of La Roche. Julie Leininger was named the AMCC Most Valuable Player after winning the No. 1 flight championship. Coach of the Year honors were shared by Penn State Behrend's Jeff Barger and Penn State Altoona's Jerry Carnicella.
