The Frostburg State men's tennis team opened competition in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with a 7-2 victory over Penn State Altoona Tuesday at Frostburg State University.
FSU junior Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) upped his 2003 No. 1 singles record to 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of the Lion's Sean Condit.
Sophomore Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 win over Andrew Turow in the fourth-seeded singles contest.
Senior Scott Ruest (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) and freshman Alan Blanks (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown) both notched wins for the Red and Black. Ruest defeated Chris Pardo 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5, while Blanks closed the singles action, gutting out a 10-5 second-set tie breaker at No. 6.
Altoona's only victories of the day came in closely contested singles matches. Sophomore Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) was beaten in a 10-7 third-set tie breaker.
The Lions notched their other win when Jared Feerrar defeated Bobcat senior Sean Shillinger (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) in the No. 3 singles match, 6-4, 6-4.
FSU swept the doubles matches.
Stephens and junior Pete Della-Luna (Moshpee, Mass./Longmeadow) teamed to win the No. 1 singles over Condit and Hofer, 8-5. Lyst and Spargenberg joined to defeat Feerrer and Turow 8-6 in the second doubles match.
The Bobcats closed out the Lions with an 8-0 win in the third doubles match when Shillinger and Ruest defeated Pardo and Cunningham.
The Bobcats (1-2, 1-0 AMCC) return to action Wednesday when they host Juniata at 2:00 at the Rawlings Racquet Club in Rawlings, Md.
