Bowery Ties Career High To Help Men's Basketball Rally Past Penn State Altoona
02/19/2003

ALTOONA, PA — Senior Pierre Bowery (Kensington, Md./Einstein) tied his career-high with 35 points, and Frostburg State overcame a 13-point deficit by outscoring host Penn State Altoona, 51-24, in the second half to post an 86-72 win in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action Wednesday night at Adler Gym.

Bowery, who had 19 points in the second half, recorded his third 35-point outing of the year and again came within just one of the FSU single-game scoring mark held by Eddie Rutledge, Donnie Woodward and Steve Liller (Rutledge scored 36 twice).

Bowery did tie a school single-game record by hitting 15-of-22 shots. Rutledge and Liller both sank 15 field goals in 1984 and 1982, respectively.

Penn State Altoona (1-23, 0-11 AMCC) came out firing from three-point range, hitting a scorching 10-of-12 shots from behind the arc in the first half to build a 48-35 lead at the break.

Frostburg State (9-15, 4-7) hit 12-of-30 from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

Penn State Altoona held a 16-15 lead at the 13:40 mark before drilling four three-pointers to open a 28-15 cushion. Frostburg State never got closer than 10 the rest of the half.

The teams' fortunes reversed in the second half, as the Bobcats sank 19-of-36 attempts from the floor, while the Lions went ice cold with an 8-for-18 performance.

FSU opened the second period with a 17-5 run over the first five minutes to close to within 53-52 and then went in front for the first time since the game's opening minutes on a jumper by Bowery.

Bowery drained another jumper at the 10:04 mark to give the Bobcats a 60-57 advantage, but Mike Collins sank one of his 10 three-pointers to tie the game for the last time.

Frostburg State gained some breathing room behind a 7-0 run, and, after the Lions closed to within four, the Bobcats put the game out of reach with a 10-2 spurt to make it a 77-65 contest with 4:03 remaining.

Junior Myro Small (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) added 12 points, while senior Robert Jones, Jr. (Ft. Washington, Md./Friendly) scored 11 points and tied his career-high of 10 rebounds. Senior A.J. Ernst (Minster, Ohio/Minster) scored 11 points as well.

Collins paced Penn State Altoona with 37 points on 12-of-19 shooting, including an amazing 10-of-14 effort from three-point range. Mark Librizzi was the only other Lion to reach double figures in scoring with 10 points.

Frostburg State closes out its regular-season slate when it hosts La Roche on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
