Calcutta Named Assistant Football Coach
08/16/2006

FROSTBURG, MD — Frostburg State University head football coach Rubin Stevenson recently announced the hiring of Dave Calcutta as the team’s defensive coordinator.

“I am excited to have Dave as a part of the coaching staff,” said Stevenson. “He has a lot of experience and his knowledge of the game will help greatly.”

Calcutta comes to Frostburg State from Clarion University where he served as an assistant coach for the last three seasons. He served as the running backs coach for the first year before switching to the defensive line for the last two.

Before joining the staff at Clarion, Calcutta spent one year as an assistant coach for Norfolk State.

Prior to Norfolk State, he spent 13 seasons as an assistant at South Carolina State. During the final season, he coached the linebackers, served as the special teams coordinator and handled all administrative duties.

During his tenure at SCSU, Calcutta coached the running backs, tight ends, wide receivers and tackles.

He helped guide SCSU to three Heritage Bowl appearances, one Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship and one Black College National Championship.

Calcutta began his coaching career at Howard where he served as a graduate assistant. While with the Bison he helped them to a Black College National Championship in 1987.

Calcutta has also coached seven athletes who played in the National Football League including Freddie Solomon, Michael Hicks and Kenny Bynum.

“I am excited about the opportunity to be a part of Frostburg State and to work with Coach Stevenson,” said Calcutta. “I have always admired the tradition of FSU and I am glad to be a part of it.”

Calcutta, who earned his bachelor’s degree in communications and theatre arts from Saint Joseph’s, is an active member of the American Football Coaches Association and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He and his wife Kim have two sons, Anthony (8) and Michael (3).
