Carnivorous Plant Conference at FSU Offers Educational, Art Activity Workshops

At the 6th Conference of the International Carnivorous Plant Society being held at Frostburg State University, there are several opportunities for people from the local area to get in on the action.

On Friday, June 2, there are two educational workshops and an art workshop suitable people from school age on up, all held in Compton Science Center room 358. For the educational workshops, parents who pay the registration fee (which covers materials) can bring one child for free. Advance registration is required.

At 9:30 a.m. will be "Carnivorous Plant Crafts and Activities," which will include building a terrarium for a sundew plant, making Venus flytrap puppets and learning the bladderwort dance. Activities are recommended for student ages 5 to 9.

At 10:30 a.m., learn all about bizarre bog plants with a series of "Carnivorous Bog Exploration Activities." Also, participants, ages 8 and up, will make a terrarium to take home with a variety of bug-eating plants: Venus flytraps, sundew and pitcher plants.

At 7:30 p.m., would-be botanical artists can learn how to draw carnivorous plants from both an artist and a scientist.

For those who would just like to shop for an unusual houseplant or literature about them, there is no charge to visit the vendors in the Compton Science Center's second floor atrium. They will be there on Friday, June 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4:50 to 6:30 p.m., and again on Saturday, June 3, from noon to 1 p.m. and again from 4:50 to 6:30 p.m.
