Children’s literature fans of all ages are invited to hear author and illustrator John Manders speak at the Frostburg Palace Theatre Wednesday, Aug. 1, as part of the Frostburg Pirate Express, a daylong series of festivities funded by the State Employees Credit Union and organized by the Frostburg State University Children’s Literature Centre, FrostburgFirst and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.
Manders will give a talk at two different times: 11:35 a.m. and 12:45 a.m. He will discuss his book, “Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies,” an enchanting pirate adventure filled with unique, “cartoony and wise-guy” illustrations detailing bunnies’ piratical escapades aboard the Salty Carrot. The event is free and open to the public.
Participants can meet fellow children’s literature enthusiasts at 9:45 a.m. at the Western Maryland Station in Cumberland, Md, for a fun-filled train ride up to Frostburg, where buses will take them to the Frostburg Palace Theatre for Manders’ talk. Those who decide to skip the train ride and join the crowd later at the lecture are asked to please register at Frostburg’s City Place by 11 a.m.
After starting out as a graphic designer and art director on both book and corporate projects, Manders switched to illustration. He uses an old masters' technique of layered colored glazes over monochromatic underpainting, and does extensive research for many of his projects, but then sometimes finds that the souls of his characters take over the drawings.
