Coffey Helps Softball Earn Split With Lake Erie
03/31/2007

FROSTBURG, Md. - Freshman Katelyn Coffey (Middletown, Md./Middletown) threw a complete-game four-hit shutout in the nightcap to help Frostburg State earn a split with Lake Erie in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference softball action, Saturday at Bobcat Field.

FSU (4-12, 1-1) dropped game one 11-4 after LEC (7-9, 5-1) blew open a 5-4 ballgame with a six-run seventh. However, FSU ended a nine-game losing skid after taking game two, 2-0, behind Coffey’s excellent performance on the mound.

The Bobcats fell behind early in game one when the Storm posted two runs in the top of the first. FSU narrowed the gap with a single run in the first. With two outs, junior Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) walked and scored when the next batter, senior Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley), doubled to left field.

After the next two innings went scoreless, LEC posted two more runs in the top of the fourth and a single run in the top of the fifth. Frostburg State answered by posting two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth as the score stood at 5-4 in favor of the visitors. Junior Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) powered the fifth with a two-run single that plated Potts and Baldwin while junior Lindsay Seal (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore (Frederick CC)) scored on an Lake Erie infield error in the sixth.

The Storm blew the game wide open in the seventh with six runs. Erica Chercourt had an two-run double while Jessica Hedrick, Brittney Binko, Sarah Miller and Shaina Vanderpool all recorded RBIs during the outburst.

Potts endured the loss for the Bobcats, pitching all 7.0 innings allowing 11 runs, six earned, on 17 hits while striking out one. Miller earned the win for the Storm after throwing 7.0 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits.

Dabkowski was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, Potts was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored and Baldwin was 1-for-2 with two runs.

Coffey led the Bobcats to a 2-0 victory in the second game. In her Bobcat Field debut, she pitched all 7.0 innings allowing just four hits, all singles, and walked just one batter while striking out one.

FSU’s offense came in the first when the team posted the game’s only runs in the bottom half of the inning. Seal scored on a wild pitch for the first and senior Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) scored freshman Amber Macintosh (Point of Rocks, Md./Brunswick) with an infield single for the second run.

Griswold was 1-for-2 with an RBI while Seal, Macintosh, Baldwin and sophomore Kaitlyn Wagner (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) each recorded a hit to account for all five FSU hits in the game.

The Bobcats return to the field tomorrow when they travel to Penn State Behrend for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
