FROSTBURG, Md. -
Freshman Katelyn Coffey (Middletown, Md./Middletown)
threw a perfect game in the second game of a doubleheader to help lead Frostburg State to a sweep of Penn State Altoona, Tuesday at Bobcat Field.
FSU (6-12, 3-1) rallied for a 4-2 win in game one and Coffey recorded 12 strikeouts in the nightcap to help the Bobcats to a 4-0 victory.
Junior Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) got Frostburg State on the board in the first inning of game one with a double down the left field line that scored freshman Amber Macintosh (Point of Rocks, Md./Brunswick).
After the Lions smacked solo homeruns in the second and third innings for a 2-1 lead, the Bobcats plated three runs in the fourth for a 4-2 advantage. Bobcat junior Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) had an infield single that scored senior Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) to tie the game and freshman Kelly Filipowitz (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) singled home sophomore Kaitlyn Wagner (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) for the game-winning run. FSU later tacked on an insurance run when junior Lindsay Seal (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore (Frederick CC)) singled home Dabkowski.
Potts, who started her tenth game on the mound for the Bobcats, settled down after allowing the two homers by retiring the final 13 Lion batters. Potts pitched all 7.0 innings allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out nine. Janice Ashenfelder took the loss for Altoona allowing all four runs on eight hits.
Filipowitz was 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate for FSU.
In the nightcap, Coffey fanned 12 of the 21 batters she faced, more than doubling her previous season-best in strikeouts. She also evened her record to 4-4 on the year.
At the plate, the Bobcats scored one run in the third and three in the fifth to earn the win.
In the third, freshman Samantha Quirin (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) singled to left field and later scored the game-winning run when Potts drew a bases loaded walk.
Freshman Lindsay Freitag (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) got things going in the fifth. She walked to lead off the inning and then stole second. After moving to third on a single, she scored when Filipowitz stole second. Three batters later, junior Heather Proud (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany (Allegany)) doubled home Macintosh and freshman Leisa Bohanon (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) for the game’s final runs.
Emily Cummins endured the loss after pitching all 6.0 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, while striking out 11.
The Bobcats return to the field on Saturday when they travel to Pitt-Bradford at 1:00 pm for a doubleheader.
