Commencement Ceremonies Slated for Saturday, Dec. 20th
12/04/2003

The 123rd commencement ceremonies at Frostburg State University will be held Saturday, Dec. 20, in the Harold J. Cordts Center Main Arena on the FSU campus.

Two exercises will be held during the day. The College of Business and the College of Education will present degrees beginning at 10 a.m. and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences ceremony will start at 2 p.m. FSU President Catherine R. Gira will confer graduate and undergraduate degrees at both events.

The featured speaker this semester will be FSU alumna Mary Beth Pirolozzi, who graduated with both a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s in education. Since 1987, Pirolozzi has worked as a district administrator for the Maryland General Assembly, having served with Senators John N. Bambacus and John J. Hafer. She is currently a member of the Allegany Family Violence Council, Sacred Heart Hospital Board of Directors, Mountainside Community Coalition and the local Toys for Happiness committee. Previously, Pirolozzi worked at FSU in a variety of capacities for over 15 years, including as an adjunct faculty member for the Department of Business. She has also served as a member of the FSU Alumni Association, where she is currently president-elect, a board member for the FSU Foundation, Inc., and a past speaker for Career Day and Network Seminar for FSU students.

Student speakers at the winter commencement include Danielle Mullen, College of Business; Courtney Bryan, College of Education, and Kathleen Murray, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

A native of New Jersey, Mullen is a business administration major and member of the American Marketing Association and FSU’s Marketing Club. Last spring, she was nominated by one of her professors to represent the FSU College of Business at the Great Baltimore Committee, an invitation extended to only a few students. In the summer, Mullen shares her leadership skills with young girls at the Ramapo Country Day Camp in New York, where she has worked as a counselor. She plans to pursue a position in marketing.

Bryan, a recreation and parks management major with a minor in psychology, has worked as a resident assistant for FSU’s Residence Life Office. For several years, she has been involved with the Maryland Conservation Corps, the state’s premier environmental youth service program. In addition, Bryan is a water safety instructor for the American Red Cross and a Search & Rescue and First Responder for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. She served as an AmeriCorps member from 2000 to 2002 and was inducted into Pinnacle, an honor society for non-traditional students. She is a resident of Calvert County, Md.

Murray, a native of Frostburg, is an English major with a minor in Women’s Studies. She has served as editor of the campus student newspaper, “The Bottom Line” for several semesters and was the student assistant coordinator for FSU’s Summer Planning Conference for freshmen. In addition, Murray worked for FSU’s Vice President of Student and Educational Services, editing publications and planning events. She is also member of the President’s Student Advisory Council and the Judicial Board Panel. Murray participated in a study abroad program in the spring of 2003 and spent a semester at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland.
