Commencement Ceremonies Slated for Saturday, May 22nd

The 124th commencement ceremonies at Frostburg State University will be held Saturday, May 22, in the Harold J. Cordts Main Arena on the FSU campus.

Dr. Catherine R. Gira, FSU president, will confer degrees on graduates during two exercises throughout the day. The College of Business and the College of Education will present degrees beginning at 10 a.m. and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences ceremony will start at 2 p.m.

Student speakers at the spring commencing include Ryan Van Fleet, College of Business; Johanna Eckhart, College of Education; and Christa Moore, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Ryan Van Fleet will graduate with a degree in economics with a public policy concentration, and minors in business and mathematics. He is a member of the National Economics Society, the National Mathematics Honor Society, the FSU Honors Program and the National Freshman Honor Society. For the FSU Department of Economics, Van Fleet has served as a workshop coordinator and a student assistant. A resident of LaVale, he has conducted two research projects on the economic effects of the prisons in Allegany County. Van Fleet will attend New York University to pursue his master's degree in economics.

Johanna Eckhart will earn her elementary education degree and music minor. Eckhart is the treasurer of the Maryland Student Education Association and a member of the Maryland State Teachers Association, the National Education Association and the National Freshman Honor Society. She served as secretary for the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference. She also participated in the FSU's Collegium Musicum, the University Chorale and Opera Workshop. Eckhart will pursue her master's degree in education at FSU, with a concentration in reading, and work as a graduate assistant in FSU's Children Literature Centre. She is a native of Williamsport, Md.

Christa Moore of LaVale has pursued a triple major - international studies, foreign languages and literature (Spanish) and economics. Moore spent a semester in Ecuador through FSU's Study Abroad Program. She served as a Spanish instructor in an after-school program and participant in Camp Hope, a home refurbishing initiative. Her experiences helped her as she served as a volunteer on a family health promotion project with the Honduran Red Cross through Amigos de las Americas. She is a member of the FSU Honors Program, National Spanish Honors Society, National Business Honors Society and the National Economics Honors Society. Moore will pursue graduate study in international development at the University of Pittsburgh.

At the afternoon ceremony, Walter N. Hedrick, FSU Class of 1941, will receive the Pinnacle Award, an honor bestowed by the FSU Foundation, Inc., for time, treasures and talent contributed to the University. Hedrick, currently a resident of Leawood, Kansas, is founder of the Hedrick Concrete Products and Landscape Corporation in Sikeston, Mo., a company of 165 employees and over $15 million in sales. Through his generous contributions to the FSU Foundation, he has established the Hedrick Teacher Excellence Award for Math/Science and the Hedrick Business Excellence Award for financially disadvantaged students. In the community, Hedrick has served as past president of the LaVale Civic Improvement Association and a member of the Sikeston, Mo., Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. He devotes much of his spare time to helping the Boy Scouts of America, where he received the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service. Hedrick was a past winner of the FSU Alumni Achievement Award, the highest honor bestowed by the FSU Alumni Association.

Presenting candidates for degrees will be Dr. Stephen Simpson, Provost; Dr. Danny Arnold, Dean of the College of Business; Susan Arisman, Dean of the College of Education and Dr. Joe Hoffman, Interim Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
