Cook, Zych Earn AMCC Softball Weekly Honors
04/20/2004

GIBSONIA, PA — Frostburg State seniors Andria Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) and Stephanie Zych (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) were named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week respectively Monday.

Cook earned her third AMCC Pitcher of the Week honor after picking up a pair of key AMCC complete-game wins last week. She allowed just four earned runs, struck out eight and walked three in 12 innings pitched.

Cook allowed 14 hits and nine runs — but only four earned — in an 11-9 win over Penn State Behrend Saturday and then tossed a three-hit shutout in an 8-0 five-inning victory over La Roche Sunday.

Cook, who has won six of her last eight starts, is 10-5 with a 2.08 ERA this year. She has 14 complete games and two shutouts. She has tied the FSU single-season records for appearances (20), starts (17) and wins (10).

"Andria gave us two outstanding efforts this past week and has helped put us in position to win the AMCC regular-season title for the first time in school history," said FSU head coach Chris Starke. "She showed a lot of toughness in that slugfest against Penn State Behrend and then came back and shut down La Roche on three singles. I can't say enough about what she has done this year."

Zych earned the first AMCC Player of the Week honor of her career after hitting .538 (7-of-13) with two doubles, six RBI and four runs scored. She also handled all 20 of her fielding chances without an error.

In FSU's sweep of Penn State Behrend Saturday, Zych went 4-for-7 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Her bases-loaded double in game two provided the winning margin in FSU's 5-2 victory.

In Sunday's sweep at La Roche, she went 3-for-6 with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk.

Zych, who is currently riding a season-high seven-game hitting streak, leads the team in walks (12), is second in both doubles (7) and RBI (17) and is fourth in batting average (.321).

"Stephanie struggled at the plate the first half of the season and placed a lot of pressure on herself hitting in the third spot in the order," Starke said. "She has been much more relaxed over the last two weeks, her batting average has risen over 70 points in that span and she has come up with some clutch hits for us."

The Bobcats are currently 20-9 overall and sit atop the AMCC with a 7-1 record. FSU returns to action Wednesday when it hosts McDaniel in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
