Creative Writing Workshop to Be Offered for Middle School Students
06/20/2012

The Frostburg State University Center for Creative Writing will present its annual Word Quest Program, a week-long creative writing class for middle school students (incoming seventh to ninth graders), from Monday, Aug. 6, to Friday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Center in downtown Frostburg. The cost for attendance is $75.

Students will have the opportunity to write poems or stories during the course of the week. On the last day, they will build “books” for their works and celebrate them with a small reception and reading at the Center. Mary Cumblidge, a local writer who holds a bachelor’s degree from FSU and a master’s from Liberty University, will teach fiction. She has published in FSU’s “Bittersweet” literary magazine and the 2010 issue of “Backbone Mountain Review” and teaches middle and high school English at Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland. Nina Forsythe, who earned an MFA at Bennington and whose poems, translations and reviews have been published in various magazines, will teach poetry. In 2010, she was awarded the Backbone Mountain Review Poetry Prize. The acting director of the Center, Forsythe conducts creative writing workshops for students of various ages in Western Maryland.

The deadline to register is Friday, July 27. For more information, visit the Center’s website at www.frostburg.edu/cwcenter/workshops/wordquest-write-a-story-write-a-poem. For questions, contact Gerard LaFemina at glafemina@frostburg.edu or call the Center at 301-687-4340.
