Ellis Qualifies for NCAA Championships at Lynchburg Classic

LYNCHBURG, VA — Junior Kiki Ellis (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships in the 55-meter dash, and junior Serena Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) finished second in three events Friday afternoon at the unscored Lynchburg College Winter Classic.

Ellis, who joined the men's team earlier in the week, ran the 55-meters in 6.43 seconds to meet the provisional standard for the National Championship meet to be held March 8-9 at Ohio Northern University.

Wheeler turned in runner-up finished in the 55-meter dash (7.52 seconds), the 200-meter dash (27.47 seconds) and the 400-meter dash (1:03.32).

In other women's events, sophomore Beth Sauder (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:35.23, while sophomore Katy Eads (West Point, Iowa/Central Lee) was second in the 1,600-meter run in 6:08.09.

Senior Cindy Reese (Westminster, Md./Westminster) was third in the pole vault with a mark of 2.85 meters, while freshman Michelle Lange (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) turned in a pair of top-10 finishes, placing sixth in the high jump (4-8) and ninth in the long jump (4.29 meters).

FSU also took first and third in the 4x400-meter relay.

On the men's side, junior Tyque McCarthy (Bowie, Md./Central) won the 400-meter dash in 54.01 seconds and placed fifth in the 200-meter dash in 24.23 seconds.

Sophomore Brian Gallagher (Burke, Va./East Lake Hall (Fla.)) captured the 1,600-meter run in 4:52.22 and finished seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:16.06.

Junior Mike Replogle (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) took home the 3,200-meter run in a time of 10:49.08, while sophomore Randy Belt (Upper Marlboro, Md./Patuxent) won the triple jump (12.44 meters), tied freshman teammate Clarence Briscoe (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College) for second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.27 seconds) and finished second in the pole vault (3.95 meters).

"This was an excellent meet for our newer and younger athletes," said Bobcat head coach Felix Moreno. "I'm looking forward to the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships (to be held Saturday at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va.). Both teams are ready, and I think we will do very well."
