English Course With Zen Focus Offered at Frostburg State University

The Department of English at Frostburg State University now offers an advanced composition course with an emphasis on Eastern culture, especially Zen Buddhism.

Entitled "Advanced Composition: An Introduction to Zen Theory," the course is scheduled one night per week to accommodate the schedules of working, non-traditional students. It is open to all registered FSU students who meet the requirements specified in the undergraduate catalog.

Students are required to write at least four extensive themes on topics reflecting their individual interests and based on research in Eastern culture, with an emphasis on Zen Theory. No meditation practice is involved. The course texts include "The Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch," "Zen in the Art of Archery," "Sacred Hoops," "The Little, Brown Handbook," "Pure Heart, Enlightened Mind," "Bhagavad Gita" and "The Three Pillars of Zen."

Dr. Paul La Chance is the course instructor. He has been a practicing member of the Rochester Zen Center since l974 and has studied Zen under both Philip Kapleau, the founder of the Rochester Zen Center and author of "The Three Pillars of Zen," and Bodhin Kjolhede, the current Abbot of the RZC. He has also published several articles in Zen Bow, the magazine of the RZC.
