FROSTBURG, MD —
Junior Kim Faust (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin)
scored 26 points and grabbed a career-high 22 rebounds, and junior Holly Myers (York, Pa./West York)
became the school's all-time leading three-point shooter as Frostburg State defeated Lake Erie, 68-57, in its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
The Bobcats (2-7, 1-0 AMCC) started out slowly, falling behind 7-1 after five minutes of play, before slowly pulling even at 14 at the halfway point behind a 7-0 run.
Faust opened the spurt with a mid-range jumper before Myers sank her 87th career three-pointer to move past Kara Reed for the school all-time record. Faust added another basket off an assist from Myers to tie the contest.
Lake Erie (1-7, 0-2) remained close the rest of the half, and sophomore Melissa Ballentine's jumper made it a 30-25 Bobcat lead heading into halftime.
Myers drained her second trey of the game to give FSU a 37-31 led with 15:58 to play, but Lake Erie freshman Shey Morris knocked down a jumper and assisted on a three-pointer by Phylicia Chiappone to bring the Storm to within one, 37-36, just over a minute later.
The Bobcats later held a slim 42-40 lead before blowing the game open with a 13-3 run over the next 4:40. The Storm missed all five of their shots from the field and committed three turnovers in the stretch.
FSU's advantage grew to as many as 16, 63-47, with 4:07 remaining, but Lake Erie made on final charge, as Ballentine scored eight straight points to pull her team to within eight, 63-55, with just over two minutes to play.
However, Bobcat junior Naomi Mason (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) drained a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down and 1:16 left in the game to seal the victory.
Senior Donita Valentine (Laurel, Md./Meade) finished with a season-high 16 points and seven rebounds, while Myers added nine points and a game-high five assists.
Frostburg State is off until January 4-5, when they host the FSU Invitational. The first day's action begins when William Smith takes on Washington (Md.) at 6, and the Bobcats will face Waynesburg at 8.
