Junior forward Kim Faust (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin)
scored 28 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, and Frostburg State held off a late La Roche rally to earn a 78-69 win over the Redhawks in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game Saturday night at the Kerr Sports Center.
The Bobcats, who improved to 7-17 overall and 3-9 in the AMCC, will travel to Erie, Pa., to face Penn State Behrend in the first round of the AMCC Tournament Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
La Roche fell to 12-11 overall and 5-7 in the AMCC and will host Pitt-Bradford in another first-round game Wednesday.
Faust, who recorded a double double for the fourth straight game and the 12th time in the last 14 contests, hit 11-of-21 shots from the field and pulled down 11 defensive rebounds.
Frostburg State held a seemingly comfortable 68-55 lead with 5:28 remaining before La Roche went on a 12-2 tear to close to within three, 70-67, with 1:50 left.
Freshman Sara Schumacher (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) hit a jumper along the baseline to put the Bobcats ahead, 72-67, and FSU sealed the win with 6-for-6 shooting from the free-throw line in the final 47 seconds.
The Bobcats jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead in the first three minutes before the Redhawks tied it with a 6-0 run. The teams battled through two more deadlocks, but La Roche used a 10-4 stretch to open a 20-14 lead.
FSU trailed by as many as seven, 31-24, with 3:55 left in the opening half but closed out the half in impressive fashion, outscoring La Roche, 10-2, to take a 34-33 lead at the break.
Faust scored eight points in the spurt, including a basket as time expired in the half.
The teams then traded the lead several times in the opening moments of the second half before FSU went on a 12-2 run to open a 48-41 lead with 15:05 to play.
La Roche pulled to within three, 53-50, on Sherry Hogue’s layup, but Bobcat junior Holly Myers (York, Pa./West York) sank a pair of free throws and a three-pointer on consecutive possessions to help FSU to a 62-53 advantage at the 9:20 mark.
The FSU lead reached 13 on back-to-back jumpers by Faust and senior Liz Paesani (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett), and the Bobcats withstood a late charge to snap their four-game losing skid.
Bobcat freshman Tracey Little (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Myers finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Hogue led La Roche with 19 points and Brittany Rosser had 17 points and 11 rebounds.
