Ferguson, Lambert Pace Track & Field at Maryland/PVA Invitational
01/26/2003

LANDOVER, MD — Junior All-American Maria Ferguson (Fairmount Heights, Md./Laurel) bested a field of Division I runners to win the 60-meter dash and highlight a solid performance by the Frostburg State track and field teams at the Maryland/PVA Invitational Saturday at the Prince George's Sports Complex.

Ferguson posted a time of 7.86 seconds to edge competitors from Division I schools including Maryland, Delaware, Coppin State and Howard.

Freshman Heather Lease (Cumberland, Md./Frostburg) finished 21st in the event in 8.53 seconds, trimming .10 off her season-opening time at the West Virginia University Invitational.

Ferguson was also the top Division III finisher in the 400-meter run, placing fifth in 1:00.88, just .38 seconds off the qualifying standard for the ECAC Championships. Lease added a 22nd-place showing in 1:06.99.

The duo then joined sophomore Lynnea Finch (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) and freshman Tredia Howell (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) to finish fifth in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:22.07.

Howell later posted a 14th-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 4.01 meters as well as a 16th-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.57 meters.

Senior Inga Olsen (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) was 17th in the 3,000-meter run in 11:47.80, while freshman Carolyn Kilkus (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) was 23rd in the event in 12:23.70.

Freshman Jennifer Waskiewicz (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) finished ninth in the shot put (10.21 meters), and freshman Laura Knight (Fallston, Md./Bel Air) placed 13th in the pole vault (2.44 meters).

On the men's side, junior Greg Lambert (Columbia, Md./Hammond) led all Division III runners in the 400-meter run with a fourth-place finish in 52.10 seconds.

He later teamed with senior Randy Belt (Upper Marlboro, Md./Patuxent), junior Travis Bouldin (Greensboro, Md./North Caroline) and freshman Michael Dorn (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) for a fourth-place showing in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:36.84.

Freshmen Ed May (Bryantown, Md./LaPlata) led FSU in the 3,000-meter run, placing 21st in 9:41.94. Fellow freshmen Sid Bittinger (Midland, Md./Westmar) and Kevin Allgeier (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) finished 24th (10:01.96) and 31st (10:30.55), respectively.

Sophomore John Densmore (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) was 23rd in the 800-meter run in 2:07.51, while Dorn and Bouldin were fouth (5.99 meters) and ninth (5.78), respectively, in the long jump.

Freshman Scott Smith (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) placed 23rd in the shot put with a mark of 10.43 meters with sophomore Rob Powell (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) one place behind at 9.75 meters.

"This was a decent start for us considering the long break," said FSU head coach Felix Moreno. "On the women's side, I was very impressed with Maria and Heather. They both ran impressive races in the 60- and 400-meter dashes. Inga and Carolyn were strong in the 3,000, and Laura and Jen continue to show promise in the pole vault and shot put.

"For the men, Greg ran a smart race in the 400-meters, and freshman sensation Matt Morgan was putting together an excellent performance before being stepped on by another sprinter and suffering a devastating calf injury. Ed, Sid and Kevin ran as expected in the 3,000-meters and are constantly improving."
