Field Hockey Drops Home-Opener to No. 10 McDaniel
FROSTBURG, MD —
McDaniel College scored a pair of goals late in the first half en route to a 4-2 win over Frostburg State in the home-opener for the Bobcats Wednesday afternoon.
The Green Terror (6-0), who entered the day ranked No. 10 in the country, opened the scoring just 2:20 into the contest when junior Kim Camponelli found the net off an assist from sophomore Clara Hollingsworth.
The Bobcats (4-4) pulled even at the 16:26 mark as senior Kim Faust (Upper Dublin/Ft. Washington, Pa.) took a feed off a penalty corner, moved to her right and blasted a shot off the left post and into the net.
McDaniel needed just 1:45 to move back in front when junior Sara Thomas scored unassisted, and the Green Terror opened a 3-1 lead on freshman Danielle Unflat's tally with 6:09 left in the half.
Frostburg State looked to rally in the second half but couldn't score during a six-minute stretch of playing a man up after a Green Terror player was sent off after a yellow card. The Bobcats just missed closing to within a goal when freshman Kim Smith (Thomas Johnson/Frederick, Md.) sent a shot wide left at 28:32.
The Green Terror kept the Bobcats at bay and netted another goal with 14:17 left as freshman Lindsay Ricks banged one in after a scramble in front.
Junior Kim Dean (Hereford/Parkton, Md.) closed out the scoring with 2:07 remaining when she collected the ball off another scramble in front and punched it into the right side of the net.
Freshman Kristin Cousin (South River/Edgewater, Md.), who made six saves, suffered the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday when they host Bridgewater at 4:00 p.m.
