WASHINGTON, PA —
Freshman Amanda Howard scored a goal and assisted on another in the first half and host Washington & Jefferson held off Frostburg State in the second half to post a 2-1 victory over the Bobcats Thursday evening at Cameron Stadium.
The Bobcats had defeated the Presidents each of the last five meetings dating back to 2001 by a combined score of 39-1.
W&J (2-2) took a 1-0 lead 21 minutes into the contest when Howard deflected home a shot by freshman Emily Bansner.
The Presidents scored off a penalty corner just over five minutes later as Howard fed freshman Lauren Fenicle to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage at the break.
Frostburg State (1-1) broke through with 15:01 remaining when sophomore forward Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) deflected a shot by junior Heidi Zook (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley) past W&J sophomore goalie Heather Browne.
However, Browne and the Presidents held the Bobcats off the board the rest of the way.
W&J held a 13-9 shot advantage and attempted 10 penalty corners to Frostburg State’s four.
Browne stopped four shots for the Presidents, while junior goalkeeper Kristin Cousin (Leonardstown, Md./Leonardstown) made eight saves for the Bobcats.
Frostburg State will look to rebound Saturday when it visits Dickinson for a noon contest.
