— Frostburg State University opened its 2003 season with a tough 1-0 loss in the Muhlenberg Invitational to host Muhlenberg College Friday afternoon.
The Bobcats battled the Mules to a scoreless tie in the first half as neither team could muster much offense. Muhlenberg opened the second half with some offensive firepower, pestering the FSU defense with 13 shots before finally getting a goal in the 20th minute by Adrienne Verbich.
Frostburg State had its best scoring chance in the last five minutes of the game as junior Amanda Boswell (Lackey/Indian Head, Md.) had a breakaway shot go wide of the goal.
FSU was outshot on the day, 16-3, with sophomore Kristin Cousin (South River/Edgewater, Md.) making 11 saves in goal for the Bobcats.
"Kristin was outstanding today, but we couldn't muster much offense to help her out," said Head Coach Nicole Bonvouloir.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow as they will play in the consolation game of the Muhlenberg Invitational at 11:00 a.m. against the loser of the Washington & Jefferson/Elizabethtown game.
