FROSTBURG, MD —
Junior Amy Serfass scored with just five seconds remaining to lift York College to a thrilling 3-2 victory over host Frostburg State Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans (8-4) took a 1-0 halftime lead when senior Lauren Guzman scored with an assist from fellow senior Sandra Lancaster at the 25:45 mark. A pair of defensive saves by sophomore Carrie Neiles kept the Bobcats off the board.
The teams then battled through 25 minutes of scoreless action before York freshman Becky McCall found the net with 9:59 remaining in the game, taking a pass from junior Vanessa Becker and beating FSU sophomore goalie Jessica Moore (Bowie, Md./Culpeper (Va.)) to give the visitors a 2-0 edge.
However, Frostburg State (4-6) rallied to tie the game with a pair of goals in a span of 2:38. The Bobcats finally got on the board with 5:45 left to play as junior Kristen Decker (West Falls, N.Y./East Aurora) netted a feed from classmate Kim Faust (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin).
Senior Katie Harrington (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) scored her fourth goal in her last three games to pull the Bobcats even with 3:07 remaining, but Serfass ended hopes of an FSU comeback when she knocked in the game-winner off a pass from senior Laura Guzman.
Sophomore Heidi Duthoy made six saves for York, while Moore stopped four shots for the Bobcats, who outshot the Spartans, 11-6.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday when they visit 18th-ranked Catholic University at 4:30 p.m.
