FROSTBURG, MD –
Five members of the Frostburg State Men's Soccer Team were named to the 2003 All- Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference squad, which was released this weekend.
Senior Mike Mutchler (Leonardtown/Leonardtown, Md.) and sophomore Matt Moffa (Eastern Tech/Baltimore, Md.) were first-team selections.
Junior Jon Roth (Magruder/Gaithersburg, Md.) was named to the second team, while senior Rob Burns (Joppatowne/Joppatowne, Md.) and sophomore Danny Simpson (Northern/Dunkirk, Md.) earned honorable mention honors.
Moffa has served as the squad's offensive leader with eight goals and two assists. Moffa scored in four of six regular-season AMCC matches, including a hat-trick in FSU's 4-0 blanking of La Roche in October.
"Matt came through this year in some big games," said Bobcat head coach Keith Byrnes. "He was one of the most consistent strikers this season."
Mutchler, an AMCC second team selection in 2002 and an honorable mention selection in 2001, anchored the Bobcat defense this year.
"Mike is the heart and soul of the team and he gave everything he had in every game this season," said Byrnes. "We will miss him as a player, but moreso as a leader and a person."
Roth tallied three goals and two assists on the season, and Byrnes says he's happy with Jon's hard work and improvement on defense.
"Although he didn't get to post the offensive stats that others did, he was a vocal leader and improved our midfield's defensive capabilities."
Burns and Simpson, who each tallied a goal and two assists this season, were pivotal players in the Bobcat backfield.
"The defense was the strength of our team and I was happy to see Rob and Danny get some recognition," said Byrnes. "With the addition of Nate [DePasquale] and Tommy [Sadler], our defense is what allowed us to have such a strong season."
