Five Bobcats Named to NFHCA National Academic Squad

Glen Allen, Va. ... Five Frostburg State student-athletes have been named to the 2000 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Academic Squad, the organization announced today.

Senior Jennifer Schmidt (Elkton, Md./North East), junior Cindy Reese (Westminster, Md./Westminster), sophomores Marie Grillo (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Heather Kanowicz (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) and freshman Ashley Mays (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) were each named to the squad.

Schmidt, a defender, started all 18 games for the Bobcats and led the team with eight assists. She also recorded her first career assist and helped FSU hold opponents to just 1.61 goals per game. Reese, a midfielder, also started all 18 games and finished second on the team in assists (10) and fourth in points (16).

Grillo appeared in 15 games with 13 starts in the midfield, posting one assist on the year, while Kanowicz saw action in all 18 games (16 starts) and had a pair of goals. Mays started all 14 games in which she played and recorded six shots on goal.

The Bobcats finished 11-7 overall and advanced to the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships for the second straight season. FSU defeated Swarthmore, 2-1, in the opening round for its first postseason win since 1987 before falling to second-seeded Montclair State, 3-1, in the semifinals.

Student-athletes must have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.30 and be a starter or key reserve to be selected to the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
