Football Drops Season Opener to Apprentice
09/10/2005

Newport News, Va. — Sophomore Travis Reid caught three first-half touchdowns to lead Apprentice to a 21-3 win over visiting Frostburg State in an Atlantic Central Football Conference game Saturday afternoon at Builder Field.

The Builders improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the ACFC, while the Bobcats fell to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

FSU is now 21-23-1 all-time in season openers, including 8-9-1 on the road to start a year.

Both offenses struggled throughout the contest with Apprentice managing just 151 yards on 65 plays and Frostburg State totaling 102 yards on 53 plays.

Things were looking good for FSU early on, as the Bobcats opened the scoring on a 36-yard field goal by freshman Mark Sedlock (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) 5:05 into the contest and held Apprentice to minus-6 yard on its first two possessions.

Reid then turned the momentum in favor of the Builders when he returned a punt 48 yards to the FSU 17. Six plays later, he hauled in a six-yard scoring strike from sophomore Kyle Franklin and Apprentice had a 7-3 lead with 2:50 left in the opening quarter.

The Builders went to their bag of tricks for their next score, as junior fullback Ben Brown connected with Reid on a 33-yard option pass with 6:48 remaining in the second quarter. Freshman Hank Schmidt booted the extra point and Apprentice had itself a 14-3 cushion.

FSU junior Dan Nice (Mount Joy, Pa./Hempfield) thwarted another Builder drive by intercepting a Franklin pass at the Bobcat 16, but the Bobcats could manage just one yard on their ensuing possession and were forced to punt for the fifth time in the first half.

Apprentice took over at its 39 with 2:50 left in the half and moved to the FSU 26 before calling timeout with one second left on the clock.

That single tick proved to be vital, as Reid lept over a Bobcat defender in the back of the end zone to haul in another scoring strike from Franklin as time expired and give the Builders a 21-3 advantage at the break.

The third quarter was a battle of futility on both sides, as the two teams combined for just 24 yards of offense on 30 plays.

Both squads had a punt, a failed fourth-down conversion and a turnover in the fourth stanza.

Apprentice finished with 13 first downs, 84 rushing yards on 54 attempts and 67 yards on 4-of-11 passing.

Frostburg State had just six first downs, 18 rushing yards on 27 carries and 84 yards on 11-of-26 passing.

Sophomore Shanorm Young (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) led FSU with 39 yards rushing on 16 carries. Junior Jimmy Ward (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) was 7-of-16 for 72 yards but was sacked three times and threw an interception. Redshirt-sophomore Fred Howze (Upper Marlboro, Md./FTH Catholic) caught two passes for 43 yards.

Bobcat junior linebacker Lathon Romaine (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) posted a game-high 10 tackles, including one sack, while senior defensive end Kevin Culbert (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) added nine tackles, including 3.5 for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

The Bobcats will look to rebound Saturday when they host Montclair State in a non-conference contest at Bobcat Stadium beginning at 1:00 pm.
