Football Falls to Moravian in ECAC Southwest Bowl Game, 14-7
11/19/2005

FROSTBURG, MD --- Senior quarterback Jerry Venturino completed 12 of 28 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran four times for 25 yards to lead the Moravian College football team to a 14-7 victory over Frostburg State University in the 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference Southwest Bowl Game Saturday afternoon.

Moravian senior linebacker Chad DiFelice was named the game’s most valuable player after making 16 tackles with two tackles for loss and a half a sack.

Moravian took the opening kickoff 69 yards on six plays with Venturino connecting on a 23-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Shawn Martell.

The extra point attempt was missed wide right giving the Greyhounds a 6-0 lead with just over 12 minutes to go in the first quarter.

FSU (6-5) would finally put a drive together late in the first quarter going 77 yards down to the Moravian 3-yard line, but sophomore Mike Perlozzo (Sayre, Pa./Athens (Virginia Tech)) was stopped on fourth down and goal to halt the drive.

After a Moravian punt, Frostburg State would take over on the Greyhound 39-yard line. Seven straight sophomore Shanorm Young (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) runs got the ball to the three-yard line before Perlozzo would punch it in for a touchdown.

Freshman kicker Mark Sedlock (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) added the extra-point to give Frostburg State a 7-6 lead with 10:01 remaining in the second quarter.

Moravian would drive inside the 20-yard line but freshman Brian Reckenbeil had a 35-yard field goal attempt blocked with 44 seconds remaining in the first half. Frostburg State would head into the locker room with a 7-6 lead.

Frostburg State would receive the opening kickoff of the second half, but would punt after three plays. On Moravian’s second play of the half, Venturino missed a handoff to junior running back Chris Jacoubs and the Bobcats recovered at the Moravian 47-yard line.

Frostburg State would drive to the Moravian 24-yard line but would eventually turn the ball over on downs at the 20-yard line.

The Bobcat defense would step up again when junior Dan Nice (Mount Joy, Pa./Hempfield) intercepted a Venturino pass at the Greyhound 30-yard line. However, Young would fumble on the ensuing play to give Moravian the ball right back with 8:32 to play in the third quarter.

After back-to-back punts, Moravian would took over at the Frostburg State 47-yard line. During the drive, Jacoubs went over the 1,000-yard mark for the third consecutive season on a two-yard carry.

Moravian moved inside the ten-yard line but on fourth and seven, freshman kicker Andrew Waggoner missed a 26-yard field goal attempt.

The Greyhounds would take over at the Frostburg State 40-yard line after several punts with 10:13 to play in the fourth quarter. Moravian would get in the end zone on a three-yard touchdown pass from Venturino to sophomore tight end Kris Bisci.

Jacoubs would then throw a halfback option pass to Bisci for the two-point conversion, and a 14-7 Moravian lead with 7:12 remaining in the fourth quarter.

After a short kickoff, freshman returner Makiha Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Forest Park) would return the ball to the Bobcat 46-yard line. FSU would again drive deep into Greyhound territory but Young would fumble again at the Moravian 22-yard line.

Frostburg State took over at its own 46-yard line with 2:11 remaining in the game. The Bobcats picked up a pair of first downs to the Moravian 23-yard line. However, two sacks would push the Bobcats to fourth down and 12 and a pass from junior Jimmy Ward (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) was incomplete with 23 seconds remaining in the game.

Moravian would take a knee for the final play of the game.

Ward completed 11 of 28 passes for 90 yards and ran for ten yards on eight carries. Young added 84 yards on 31 carries for the Bobcats.

Senior defensive lineman Kevin Culbert (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) led the Bobcats with nine tackles, a pass break-up and a fumble recovery, followed by junior Lathon Romaine (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) who added seven tackles including four for loss.
