FROSTBURG, MD —
Junior Grant Burrough (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright)
threw for a career-high 352 yards and two touchdowns, and junior Edward Kearney (Bel Air, Md./Calvert)
ran for a personal-best 212 yards to power Frostburg State to an impressive 42-6 season-opening victory over Apprentice Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Burrough also ran for 28 yards and another score to give him a single-game school-record 380 total yards of offense. He eclipsed the former mark of 379 set by Jason Henry against Kentucky Wesleyan in 1999.
The Bobcats (1-0, 1-0 ACFC), who won their 200th game in the program's 42 years, jumped out to a 17-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. FSU racked up a whopping 634 yards of total offense on 60 plays despite losing the time of possession battle, 38:04-21:56.
Sophomore fullback Bereket Godsey (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) opened the scoring with a five-yard run at the 9:47 mark, and Burrough dove in from a yard out just under five minutes later.
Sophomore Nick Quisgard (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) nailed a 21-yard field goal with 1:51 to play in the first quarter to give FSU a comfortable lead.
The Bobcats took a 23-0 cushion in the closing moments of the half when senior Tim Wilkins (Baltimore, Md./Mervo) recovered a fumble of a pass by Burrough to junior Roy Olson (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills(Ferrum)) just outside the goalline and fell into the end zone for another score.
In the third quarter, Olson snared a Burrough pass over the middle and raced into the end zone for a 61-yard touchdown, his first as a Bobcat. Olson finished with five catches for a game-high 187 yards in his collegiate debut.
FSU continued to pour it on on its next possession, as Burrough connected with junior Anthony Long (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) for a 67-yard scoring strike to give the Bobcats a commanding 36-0 lead.
Apprentice (1-1, 0-1) finally found the end zone on its ensuing opportunity when Shawn Jackson took a short pass from Terrence Patrick and raced down the Builder sideline for a 56-yard touchdown. However, the extra point was blocked.
Godsey capped the scoring on the final play of the third quarter when he bulldozed his way through traffic en route to a 16-yard touchdown run - his career-high second score of the game - completing a seven-play, 99-yard drive that took just 2:13.
Freshman Chris Lentz (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) began his collegiate career in style with a game-high 14 tackles, including nine solo stops. Junior Dave Lightner (Cherry Tree, Pa./Purchase Line) and senior George O'Brien (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) added nine tackles apiece.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday when they visit regional powerhouse Montclair State (0-1) at 1:00 pm.
