NEWPORT NEWS, Va. —
The Frostburg State football team has been picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic Central Football Conference this season as voted by the league’s coaches.
Wesley, coming off a NCAA Division III semifinal appearance and a 12-2 overall record, edged out SUNY Brockport for first place in the 2006 preseason coaches poll with three first-place votes and five points.
Brockport returns 20 starters including the 2005 ACFC Rookie of the Year Zack Luke. The Golden Eagles received two first-place votes from the coaches and a total of six points.
Salisbury was picked third with 10 points. The Sea Gulls return 10 starters from a squad that finished 8-3 overall and were the Eastern College Athletic Conference Champions after downing Franklin & Marshall 27-23.
Frostburg State, the third team from the ACFC to participate in postseason action last fall, was picked fourth with 13 points. The Bobcats return 15 starters, eight all-conference selections, including junior tailback Shanorm Young (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) who rushed for 993 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.
Apprentice was selected fifth, 16 points, in the league after snapping its 14-game conference losing streak. The Builders return 19 starters including first-team all-conference defensive lineman Orlando Robinson.
FSU opens its season when its hosts Apprentice on Saturday, September 9 at 6:00 pm for the first ever night game at Bobcat Stadium.
