SCRANTON, Pa. —
Junior Krystin Hargrove (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook)
scored a game-high 19 points and senior Stephanie Watts (Baltimore, Md./North County)
set the school record for steals in a game with 13, as the Frostburg State women’s basketball team defeated Hood, 71-54, in the opening round of the fourth annual Diversified Invitational, Friday evening.
The two squads battled early with neither team taking more than a three-point lead until the Bobcats (6-1) opened a five-point advantage, 19-14, with 9:58 remaining when freshman Caryn Wright (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) made a layup.
With 9:20 left in the half, FSU took its first double-digit lead, 25-14, when junior Tracie George (Windber, Pa./Windber) drained a three pointer.
After Hood (2-6) narrowed the deficit to 29-23 at the 5:20 mark, Frostburg State scored nine-straight points to take a 15-point lead, 38-23, with just 3:12 remaining.
The Blazers shaved the the Bobcat lead to 41-28 at the half.
FSU scored the first seven points of the second half as it extended its lead to 48-28 just over four minutes into action. With 10:08 left in regulation, Hood closed the gap to 16, 54-38, on a Michelle Manella three pointer.
FSU wouldn’t allow the Blazers to come any closer as it opened a 61-39 lead with 6:12 left before closing out the contest with a final score of 71-54.
George finished with 15 points followed by Wright with 11 while Watts led the teams with eight rebounds.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow at 4:00 pm for the championship game when they face the winner of RPI/Scranton.
