Frostburg State Players Share AMCC Men's Tennis Player, Newcomer of the Year Honors
04/22/2004

GIBSONIA, PA — Frostburg State and Penn State Behrend, who battled closely all season for supremacy in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, split the awards for AMCC Men's Tennis Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.

Frostburg State junior Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) and Penn State Behrend senior Ryan Deimel were voted Co-Players of the Year, while FSU senior Dustin Robinson (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and PSB freshman Matt Meyer were selected Co-Newcomers of the Year.

Penn State Behrend's Jeff Barger took home Coach of the Year honors after guiding his squad to a 6-0 regular-season AMCC mark and the AMCC Tournament title. The Lions edged the Bobcats 11-10 for the championship.

Lyst enjoyed an outstanding season, posting a perfect 6-0 mark against AMCC foes at the No. 2 singles spot as well as a 5-1 mark in the league at No. 1 doubles.

At the AMCC Tournament, Lyst won the No. 2 singles championship and teamed with senior Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) to capture the No. 1 doubles title.

Overall, Lyst was 12-6 in singles play and 14-3 in doubles this season.

Robinson, in his first and only season of intercollegiate competition, won both the No. 4 singles title and paired with fellow senior Pete Della-Luna (Moshpee, Mass./Longmeadow) to claim the No. 2 doubles championship.

Robinson was 10-8 in singles action and 8-10 in doubles competition this year.

Six Bobcats earned first-team All-AMCC honors by virtue of winning titles at the AMCC Tournament.

Lyst and Robinson were first-team selections in singles play, while Stephens, Lyst, Della-Luna and Robinson were first-team honorees in doubles.

Stephens and Della-Luna were also named to the second team after runner-up finishes at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles flights, respectively.

The Bobcats finished the season 5-11 overall and 3-3 in the AMCC.
