Frostburg State Season Ends With a 7-2 Loss to Montclair State in NCAA Regional Semifinals
BOYERTOWN, Pa. —
Seventh-seeded Frostburg State suffered a season-ending 7-2 loss to second-seeded Montclair State in the 2006 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional at Bear Stadium, Friday evening.
FSU finishes the regional with a 2-2 record and closes out the 2006 campaign with a 29-13 overall mark. MSU (30-17-2) advances to face No. 3 seed Kean (31-16) on Saturday at noon in the loser’s bracket final. The top-seeded College of New Jersey (38-6) is in the championship game waiting for the winner of Montclair State/Kean.
The Bobcats opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) led off the inning with a walk. He advanced to second when junior Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) grounded into a double play allowing Barone to move to third and after sophomore Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) was hit by a pitch, the Bobcats executed a double steal with Barone swiping home for the first run of the game.
The Red Hawks tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Andrew Vicaro doubled home Rob Bowness. First baseman Lou Politan grounded out to the pitcher allowing Vicaro to take third, but FSU starter Freddy Foshay (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) stranded him getting Scott Evangelist on a grounder to second.
FSU took another brief lead in the top of the fourth after scoring one run. Webb reached second base on a dropped fly ball and later moved to third on a wild pitch. Speights singled to left field scoring Webb to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.
The lead didn’t last long as MSU plated four runs in the home half of the inning. Bowness led off the inning with a bunt single, made second on a walk and ended up on third after a Frostburg State error. Lou Politan drove home Bowness with a fielder’s choice groundout. Scott Evangelist then singled home Robert Clark and Kevin Cuozzi hit a two-run double to cap the inning.
The Red Hawks posted single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to close out the scoring.
Senior reliever Ryan Stevens (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) suffered his only loss of the season pitching 2.0 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits. Tim Stringer threw all 9.0 innings for Montclair State giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits while earning his third win of the season.
