Frostburg State University Annual Fund Campaign Exceeds Fiscal Year Goal
Among this year’s telemarketers are graduating seniors, shown here in the Tawes Automated Telemarketing Center, (front) supervisor Antoine Lewis, senior telemarketer Manual De La Cruz, (back) supervisor Dave Pishioneri and supervisor John Moran.
With one month left in the fiscal year, the 2006-07 Frostburg State University Annual Fund campaign has exceeded its established goal of $200,000 by over $23,000 this year due to a very successful telemarketing campaign and a Faculty & Staff Campaign initiative that far exceeded its goal and had one of the highest rates of participation in the University System of Maryland.

To date, over 2,700 donors have contributed, including more than 775 new Annual Fund donors. Through direct mail appeal, telemarketing, e-solicitations and personal visits, the Annual Fund, along with other development initiatives for restricted and endowed funds, will have its best year ever, surpassing the $3.0 million mark in contributions to the University.

“It has been a great year of private support to Frostburg State University.” said Jack Aylor, Director of Development, Executive Director of the FSU Foundation, Inc. “We’ve experienced a significant rise in annual gifts and major gifts.”

The success of the latest Annual Fund campaign is due to the hard work of FSU students. FSU’s automated telemarketing center employs over 40 students and three student managers. Under the direction of Jeff Krone, development specialist and telemarketing director, over 17,000 phone calls are made to alumni, friends and parents asking for unrestricted gifts to the fund.

“The success of the telemarketing campaign is due to the dedication and commitment of our student telemarketing team,” says Krone. “They increased overall giving, the average gift and credit card payments while representing Frostburg State University professionally and cheerfully.”

Students verify information, tell potential donors about current FSU events and initiatives and ask for a gift to the Annual Fund.

In addition, the Faculty & Staff Campaign, supported by new FSU President Jonathan Gibralter and initiated and managed by the Faculty & Staff Campaign Committee, has reached a remarkable 64 percent rate of participation. This is a 40 percent increase from last year’s campaign and one of the leading percentages in the 13-institution University System of Maryland.

“I am extremely proud of the efforts of our entire University community in realizing the most successful Annual Fund drive in the history of the Frostburg State University,” Gibralter said. “The record-setting commitment of the Frostburg State University community toward the Annual Fund demonstrates their collective belief in this University and its future. I am very grateful to Chris Harmon and our Leadership Committee who ran an Annual Fund campaign that can be considered a model for any University. They did an outstanding job.”

The 16-member committee is a dedicated group of faculty and staff who realized that support from within the University would lead to increased outside support from alumni, friends, corporations, organizations, parents and others.

Through the encouragement of this committee, 16 departments had a participation rate of 100 percent and over $210,000 was raised in support of University programs and needs. Facilities, the largest representation by a department at the University, stepped up to support FSU with a 75 percent participation rate.

"I am very pleased with our staff's generous response to this year's effort. Many of them are descendants of the town folks who made the original contributions to assure that State Normal School #2 became a reality. So, the great tradition of benevolence, originating in the late 19th century continues in the 21st century.” said Gary Love, the staff Annual Fund Coordinator in the Physical Plant.

Last year contributions to the Annual Fund fostered student scholarships, student development, student work programs, the Alumni Association, faculty/staff/University leadership and development and special events. Over $84,000 in direct support was given to FSU through the Annual Fund, including over $35,000 in scholarships. In addition, the Annual Fund also provided scholarship support through 25 named scholarships at $1,000 each. Generous contributors dedicated these much-needed scholarships to FSU students in honor or memory of family, friends and colleagues.
