Frostburg State University Named Military Friendly for Second Straight Year
Victory Media, Inc., which provides publications for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has recognized Frostburg State University for the second straight year as a Military Friendly School. The 2013 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

“Inclusion on the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools shows Frostburg State University’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,” said Sean Collins, director for G.I. Jobs and vice president at Victory Media.

“I am very pleased that Victory Media has recognized FSU as a Military Friendly School. Our service members deserve no less,” said FSU President Jonathan Gibralter. “I can only hope that we can show our gratitude to our service members by doing everything we can to facilitate their participation in the educational process. It is our honor to serve them.”

In May, Gibralter was invited to testify on behalf of American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and FSU before the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs’ Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity in May, as the subcommittee was reviewing President Obama’s Executive Order on Veterans Education, designed to improve delivery of higher education opportunities to veterans and providing them with better consumer protection.

“Frostburg State University and other AASCU institutions are eager to continue meeting the needs of our military members and veterans as well as their families,” Gibralter told the subcommittee.

The Military Friendly Schools media and website, found at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, feature the list, interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences. The 1,739 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year’s list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience.

Service members and veterans can also virtually meet individual student veterans from the various schools on the site to learn more about personal school decisions and the transition from the military to an academic environment. FSU’s featured veteran this year is Bernie McCarty, Jr., an elementary education major with a concentration in middle school social studies who spent four years in the Marines as an aviation armament repair technician. Now in its fourth year, the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. The survey tabulation process, methodology and weightings that comprise the 2013 list were independently verified by Ernst and Young LLP. Each year schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board consisting of educators from schools across the country.

“As interest in education grows, we’re thrilled to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools,” Victory Media’s Collins said.

A full story and detailed list of 2013 Military Friendly Schools will be highlighted in the annual G.I. Jobs Guide to Military Friendly Schools, distributed in print and digital format to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in early October. Victory Media is a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business founded in 2001. Victory’s lists are also published in G.I. Jobs, Military Spouse and Vetrepreneur magazines.
